NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The first definitive history of the Mossad, Shin Bet, and the IDF’s targeted killing programs, hailed by The New York Times as “an exceptional work, a humane book about an incendiary subject.”

WINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD IN HISTORY

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY JENNIFER SZALAI, THE NEW YORK TIMES
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Economist • The New York Times Book Review BBC History Magazine Mother Jones • Kirkus Reviews

The Talmud says “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel’s DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small, sometimes in response to attacks against the Israeli people and sometimes preemptively.

In this page-turning, eye-opening book, journalist and military analyst Ronen Bergman—praised by David Remnick as “arguably [Israel’s] best investigative reporter”—offers a riveting inside account of the targeted killing programs their successes, their failures, and the moral and political price exacted on the men and women who approved and carried out the missions.

Bergman has gained the exceedingly rare cooperation of many current and former members of the Israeli government, including Prime Ministers Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon, and Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as high-level figures in the country’s military and intelligence services the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), the Mossad (the world’s most feared intelligence agency), Caesarea (a “Mossad within the Mossad” that carries out attacks on the highest-value targets), and the Shin Bet (an internal security service that implemented the largest targeted assassination campaign ever, in order to stop what had once appeared to be unstoppable suicide terrorism).

Including never-before-reported, behind-the-curtain accounts of key operations, and based on hundreds of on-the-record interviews and thousands of files to which Bergman has gotten exclusive access over his decades of reporting, Rise and Kill First brings us deep into the heart of Israel’s most secret activities. Bergman traces, from statehood to the present, the gripping events and thorny ethical questions underlying Israel’s targeted killing campaign, which has shaped the Israeli nation, the Middle East, and the entire world.

“A remarkable feat of fearless and responsible reporting . . . important, timely, and informative.”—John le Carré

Rise and Kill First The Secret History of Israel Targeted Assassinations edition by Ronen Bergman Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

  • It's a long, often repetitive book, perhaps best read along with a couple of others to break the monotony. It is also a well-documented book and a thoroughly interesting read; a real eye-opener to the dirty world of nation-sponsored assassinations and the inevitable repercussions such acts demand of an enemy, any enemy.

What Immediately comes across is the great difficulty and rarity of performing successful operations, which is a good thing because they apparently got a lot wrong before Meir Dagan restructured Mossad . The tit-for-tat vengeance reaped by one side and then the other is the endless, self-destroying regional legacy that we still see today. These pages of stories of death bear remarkable resemblance to the phrase "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." In that, the book is a frustrating read, much like the realities of life in that region with no end in sight to the miseries that that long-bloodied land beholds.

The post-September 11th chapters are especially interesting, and should be mandatory reading for every world leader.

Great men have tried solutions. None have yet been found. And so it continues.
  • “Rise and Kill First,” Ronen Bergman’s revelatory and astonishing history of Israel’s targeted assassinations, is a brilliant and prodigiously researched work. Readers will be riveted and amazed both by the scale of the killings carried out by the Israeli security services and by their tactical genius. They will likewise be appalled by the price in human lives, both innocent and not so innocent, at which Israel’s survival has been purchased. And they will be profoundly saddened as they comprehend how that survival has required the best and bravest of Israel’s young men and women to steel themselves against the fundamental moral precepts that govern ordinary life.

Bergman bluntly tells us – and most readers will agree – that the targets of Israel’s assassinations deserve to die. They have planned and
executed the cold-blooded murder of hundreds of Israeli civilians – men, women, children and infants – as they go about the activities of their daily lives. No cause, no grievance, can ever mitigate such atrocities. And in war, where there is no realistic possibility of arresting and trying the perpetrators, the justice of striking them down is, at least to this reader, not open to serious moral question.

But things are not always so simple, even when the target of an assassination is a terrorist murderer. As in one instance recounted by Bergman, it may happen that, despite the best efforts of counter-terror forces to ensure that the target will be at home alone when the hit occurs, he must be shot in front of his wife and teenage daughter. Unpleasant, says the operative in relating the story to Bergman, but the job must be done. And he does not hesitate to do it.

Infinitely worse, of course, is the loss of totally innocent life that is the virtually inevitable by-product of assassinations carried out from the air or by explosive. As detailed by Bergman, Israel does try to prevent this, and countless operations have been aborted because of the likelihood that unacceptable “collateral damage” will occur. But if no harm to innocents were deemed tolerable, many operations could simply not be carried out.

And that would not be without consequence to innocent Israelis. As Bergman shows, in some cases where operations were called off because of the likelihood of harm to innocent bystanders, the terrorists thus spared have gone on to commit attacks in which dozens of Israeli civilians were killed. That causes one security officer to tell Bergman that although it causes him genuine pain when an Arab child is killed in an Israeli operation, if a child is going to be harmed, he would prefer that the child not be Israeli. Is it wrong, or natural, to care for one’s own people first?

The Israeli government has no doubt about the answer. And although many innocent Arab lives were lost in the unprecedented number of Israeli assassinations that took place in response to the horrific wave of terrorism that struck Israel during the Second Intifada, those operations, together with the IDF’s Defensive Shield offensive in the West Bank, gave the lie to the familiar bromide that there is no military solution to terrorism. The Israelis found one, putting down the Second Intifada by force of arms. In winning that victory, Israel’s program of targeted assassinations played an important part.

More recently, Israel has targeted Iranian scientists working on the country’s nuclear program for elimination. That caused a female Mossad agent to stand up at one meeting and declare that her father was a scientist who had helped develop Israel’s nuclear capacity and ask her colleagues whether they would consider him a legitimate target for assassination by the enemy. Her question did not receive much by way of an answer, but the killing of Iranian nuclear scientists continued.

Unfortunately, the dazzling feat of groundbreaking reportage and riveting narrative achieved by Bergman in “Rise and Kill First” is marred in the book’s final pages by some unaccountable and highly misleading statements about the agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear program (formally known as the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action”(“JCPOA”))reached between Iran and six world powers in July 2015. Relating the prior clash between former Mossad chief Meir Dagan and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the feasibility and wisdom of an Israeli military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Bergman writes that the JCPOA , which mooted their debate, was

an Iranian capitulation to a number of demands that the ayatollahs had been rejecting for years. Iran agreed to dismantle the nuclear project almost entirely and to be subject to strict limits and supervision for many years into the future

In view of the heated controversy then raging in the United States over whether the JCPOA would effectively restrain Iran’s nuclear program, or put it on a glide path to becoming a nuclear-armed power, Bergman’s characterization of the agreement as an “Iranian capitulation” is nothing less than startling. And while one might argue that whether the deal was a good one or a bad one is a matter of opinion, Bergman misstates the underlying facts on which his opinion is based.

Thus, contrary to his assertion, the deal did not require Iran to “dismantle” anything, let alone its “entire[ ]” nuclear project; it only required that Iran mothball centrifuges that exceeded the agreement’s limits during its term. And the agreement provided that its restrictions on Iran’s enrichment of uranium to near-fissile purity would sunset after 15 years, hardly a prohibitive period to religious fanatics playing a long game.

Further, the agreement placed no restrictions on Iran’s development of ballistic missiles, and its research on high speed centrifuges was allowed to continue. As to the latter, even Barack Obama acknowledged that, after the agreement’s sunset, high-speed centrifuges could “[shrink] breakout times [for Iran to construct a nuclear bomb] . . . almost down to zero.”

Bergman refers to none of this in characterizing the JCOPA as an “Iranian capitulation.” Similarly, while asserting (without much explication) that the agreement represented “a double triumph” for Meir Dagan, he fails to mention that the JCPOA was opposed not only by Benjamin Netanyahu, but also by opposition leaders Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni, in very strong terms.

The result is that a not otherwise-informed reader could well come away with a false, or at best incomplete, picture of the issues surrounding the Iran nuclear agreement. To me that is a grievous fault, but one paragraph in a book of more than 600 pages cannot affect its overall quality.

Bergman ends his book with a lament that Israel’s intelligence and security agencies have been so successful as to foster “the illusion among most of the nation’s leaders that covert operations . . . could be used in place of real diplomacy.” Toward the end of his life, Bergman writes, Meir Dagan (who is the deserved hero of this book) realized “that only a political solution with the Palestinians – the two-state solution – could end the 150-year conflict.” Ill with cancer, Dagan tried with his last energy to persuade the Israeli public to elect a leadership that would vigorously pursue that aim.

But his efforts were to no avail. Despite the enormous adulation he enjoyed as the ultimate Israeli master spy, Dagan’s speech, as well as the calls of many other former heads of the intelligence and military establishments for a compromise agreement with the Palestinians
. . . have all fallen on deaf ears.

One can easily imagine what may animate the longing for peace of retired heroes like Meir Dagan. They have dedicated their lives to protecting Israeli civilians from the remorseless terrorists who would murder them, and that has required them to do terrible things. Reflecting on what they have seen and done, it would not be surprising for them to feel moral qualms and wish there was another way. As one former head of the security service observed in the film The Gatekeepers, “[w]hen you leave Shin Bet, you become a bit of a leftist.”

Being removed from the dirty business of targeted assassinations, the average Israeli voter may see things more dispassionately. What he sees is the Palestinians’ unremitting intransigence, their rejection without counteroffer of generous Israeli proposals for a two-state solution, the Palestinian Authority’s pension payments for the murder of Israeli men, women and children, and the Holocaust denial and gross anti-Semitism of Mahmoud Abbas, the supposedly moderate president of the PA.

What exactly can be done to persuade such people to negotiate in good faith about peace? Ronen Bergman doesn’t say.
  • This is an amazing book, sometimes very disturbing but consistently providing a journalistic view of Israel and it’s fight for survival. The story is one I knew in broad outline but this book puts flesh on the basic bones. It let me understand the driving forces, and the people behind, many critical decisions made during Israel’s tumultuous history. Overall, I came away with the sense that, warts and all, mistakes (and there were many) and all, Israel needed to do what was done to survive. A must read for anyone interested in the history of Israel or just fascinated by deep insight into one of the worlds best secret services.
  • I anticipated this book would be bias and focused on exciting details of the various operations, but instead it was a non-bias and self-critical review of Israel's various covert operations against terrorists and state actors. The book is worth reading strictly to gain insights into the Israel's history and the broader dynamics in the Middle East and beyond. From a strategy perspective it provides details on the national level decision making process that went into many operations, to include cases where poor judgment resulted in undesired effects. At the tactical level, special operators will find a wealth of lessons based on the successes and failures of Israel's numerous covert operations. It is written well, and even the layperson will find it understandable.
  • This book seems like a history of Israel in some respects, except Bergman decided to narrow his focus. He has tons of references, interviews, and sources.Took a long time to write.  The secret history makes fiction look tame. Gives fiction writers plenty to develop for plots and clandestine scenarios. Amazing work.
  • Excellent and important book. Unbelievable access and research. When the head of an intelligence agency says he is disturbed by how a writer managed to get so much information, you know the writer is doing something right!

In the mid-1800s, a group of painters based in New York turned their focus to the theme of the natural landscape to demonstrate the beauty of the wilderness. Their work enjoyed a popular national success that no other group of artists has achieved since. This seminal survey of the artists marks the first presentation of the outstanding collection at the New-York Historical Society. It features works by all the greatest artists of the group, including Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Church. Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, the book is also timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s first voyage up the Hudson River.

  • I purchased this because I wanted a book about the New-York Historical Society and its colleciton. The text about the Hudson River School was interesting and different from other books I have. Plenty of high quality color illustrations.
  • This is a beautifully balanced book, blending relevant and insightful text with more than 100 gorgeous reproductions paintings. I love this book.
  • This is an AMAZING book! So much information about the artworks and artists! Lots of beautiful reproductions as well! It was a gift and she ABSOLUTELY Loved it! I would highly recommend it!
  • I was looking for a detailed overview of the artists of the Hudson River School.
This was just what I wanted. It starts in New York and goes up the river in location and
forward in history. Eventually going beyond the Hudson to the West and South America.
A lot of the understanding of art comes from the history context. This book had an excellent
blend of both. Very helpful to understand the motivations and meanings. It put this genre
in context with the other movements in the 19th century. It also lead me into purchasing
deeper monographs on the artists that I liked.
  • Great book for those who like the Hudson River School!
  • Gorgeous color reproductions, insightful historical context. The definitive guide to the artists of the Hudson River School. I love it!
  • The plates are gorgeous
  • Great book! Nice pictures. But mine (hardcover) came in warped.

The Penguin Historical Atlas of Ancient Egypt Hist Atlas Bill Manley Books Reviews

  • Much nonsense has been written about ancient Egypt, trying too hard to
simplify its huge complexities over 3,000 and more years. Its history is
mainly known through Manetho, an Egyptian priest who wrote in Greek
from sources he could not identify. Known not in Manetho's writing but
in references in the works of non-Egyptian writers, like Josephus. Bill
Manley has put together an historical atlas that combines pages of informed
textual information and engaging maps. There are gaps in his coverage, and
not everyone will agree with some of his descriptions or map borderlines. For
example, he is not very clear on the pre-Israelites and the Israelites. Sad to say,
neither is anybody else. But this is as good an historical atlas of ancient Egypt
    as there is.
  • The text of this atlas contains too many typographical errors, for example, on page 20 the date of climate changes in northeast Africa is given as 700 BC when it should be 7,000 BC! The book should have had better editing. Also, the bibliography is not very helpful. However, the maps are excellent. The book is worth buying just for the maps.
  • I enjoy learning about ancient Egypt. Often the authors would write about Egyptian doing such and such, but I would have no idea about where things were occurring. Since ancient Egypt exist along the Nile river and delta (a very specific location) it is very helpful for me to have a map right next to reading material to give an appreciation of where things are happening.
  • This scholarly book traces the history of Egypt from 5000 to 305 BC through maps and what is known of pharaohs during that time. Amazingly, there are many centuries where the number of kings are estimated, but none are known. It mentions wars, changes of rulers of certain areas, and why these happened. There is an index which you will need because in most cases, both Grecian and Egyptian names are included in the maps. If you have ever flown over the Nile on the way to somewhere else, you will appreciate the maps in this book and how important this river was and is to the country.
  • Great compact book about the history of ancient Egypt. They really fit a lot of info in a short book.
  • I am using the Atlas in conjunction with a number of historical books on Egypt that I purchased from previously. It is a very great assistance
  • The Penguin series of Historical Atlas are always very comprehensive and if you are "map oriented" like I am you will find these maps very useful. The text is also extremely well done, with the most accurate and up to date thinking about the events represented.
  • Great maps, superb narrative, well researched, very well done historical overview of Egypt. I liked it a lot.

"I had no naive ideas that this book would not be a hard read. I knew what I was getting into, literally a quarter of my bookcases are full of non-fiction or historical fictions that take place during the Holocaust or WWI/WWII. Even then I had to close the book sometimes because it all seemed too real.

Layla, her parents, and thousands of other Muslims are sent to an internment camp called Mobius, the fact that it was close to the Japanese internment camp Manzanar was not lost on me either. The cause of such a drastic move? Islamophia. Does it sound familiar? This book is placed in what seems like a few years from now, in this presidency, under this current political climate and that made this book all the more urgent.

The scenes that take place in the book are appalling not because they are violent, but because we see actions like this committed every day. A hijab being ripped off a woman's head, a man being shot just because he is Muslim, a woman being silenced because she has no right to speak. How did they end up here? The census, that one that keeps track of our religions, ages, nationalities, and livelihoods that we report to the government every now and then. That flimsy piece of paper, if you checked Islam you are at Mobius.

The president has declared Muslims an enemy of the state, so they rounded them up just like they did to Japanese-Americans in the past. Layla had learned of this history in school and it was her only reference to what was happening to her, it made her scared and at times selfish but determined. She refused to live the rest of her life there. So she decided to make a start much like Sophie Scholl did during the time of Nazi propaganda. This was scary because let's remember that Sophie was executed. She knew it was a risk but to be honest she could have died just as easy by just being within those gates, anyone who made false moves were taken away never to be seen again.

I won't ruin the story by elaborating on the allies that she finds or those that learn of her plans and join her in the revolution, because that is honestly the best part of the story. The teenagers in this book used their place of "Privilege" as minors to get ahead. They couldn't be treated like the others, they couldn't just simply be disappeared without a trace. So they stood tall and spoke for those who couldn't. That is the point of the book. It is to educate the younger generation, allow them space to reflect, and show them that just because their young does not mean they are powerless. A small voice is better than no voice and this book does its best to bring that home.

Despite all its harsh reminders, it also gives us a sense of hope. Not everyone in the country agrees with what is going on, kind of like now. Those people fought for them when they learned of the injustices, even some that allowed it to happen realized it was a big mistake and joined the cause. It is the kind of situation where you won't really know how to react until it's happening and I am glad the book provides a space for both.

Rating 5/5 ❤❤❤❤❤

My rating is a #unpopular opinion with many readers of this book, I will give some examples of the complaints below and my reasoning behind why it shouldn't matter. You can make your decision on this and read it for yourself as we all know books are perceived differently by different readers.

The book is too obvious, it doesn't give us space to make our own conclusions said by most people over the age of 21- The book wasn't made for them, it was made for younger readers who need books that tell a compelling story quickly and with all the consequences and backstory because attention spans for reading these days is short. I mean come on, I get annoyed when a commercial interrupts my anything and its only 30 seconds.

Layla is selfish it looks like all she wants is her boyfriend- Her mom and dad are in the camp with her, so the only person on the outside she can really want is her boyfriend, but that scene where she begs to call him is not about David. It's about everyone's loved ones outside those gates. Everyone has to beg for a phone call, get it approved, and still be careful because they are being listened to. For Layla that was David but for others, that was a husband, a son, or a daughter.

Layla is too informed about previous internment camps in history- I learned about the Holocaust and Japanese internment camps when I was in tenth grade, two years younger than Layla, and was taught by an amazing student teacher, who really ingrained in us the importance of studying situations like this and learning from them. I have continued to educate myself and read about those moments in history ever since then. So yes, she could have been that educated about the topic at 17.

David is annoying- Indeed he is, I honestly am still trying to comprehend if he could have been written in a different way where he didn't seem so clueless and unaware of what was going on around him. I know he was trying his best and did play a role in it but he just seemed out of place a bit.

The Director of the Internment camp is cartoonish- yes he is, but what matters is not his reactions but his power. Time and time through the book he shows that he can get away with literally anything. He gives an air of desperation to Layla's resistance. The fact that his actions have no consequences is what matters. Because it means that at Mobius there were no respites, no way out, no one to protect them. They were no one. He got angry like a child sometimes and turned blue in the face because of her actions, but let's not pretend that there weren't people in internment camps who died just because a guard was in a bad mood.

The book was too raw, too crass it felt like it was throwing its beliefs at me- It is raw at times and in your face but if you were inside the internment camp it would be in your face, you would be in the middle of the violence, you would feel the oppression, this book is not about beliefs its about right and wrong. The book makes you feel like you are there like there is no place to go. That is the point, they had nowhere to go.

Now that you have been informed about the chief complaints of the book, I hope that you give it a chance and make your own opinion on the matter. This is such an important book for young adults to have a discussion about these days, and for adults to read and share with others."

Internment Samira Ahmed Books Reviews

  • I had very high hopes for this book. After reading the summary I was filled with anticipation, is it going to be like the holocaust? Guantanamo? Nope. This book had such potential to be something really great. This is something that could become a real thing in our future. The execution however left much to be desired. I don't believe the author did any sort of research for a book like this. She has no basic knowledge of how any sort of camp or prison works or just chose to ignore anything practical. By far the one thing that I think just makes the whole story crap is that you wrote a 17-year-old starting a revolution inside the camp and stopping the Muslim internment. I think it was a poor choice to write a book about such an important topic and then make it about a girl who is obsessed with her boyfriend.
  • This book begins during a horrific time for Muslims in the U.S. A president has been elected who tweets his hatred of Muslims almost daily. Fake news abounds and refugees are being called rapists and criminals. The Secretary of War is an Islamophobe – and yes, that’s a cabinet seat we haven’t seen for a while in real life. It has a slightly different ring to it than Secretary of the Army or Secretary of Defense. Nazis have marched on DC and books are burning. There is so much wrong with the country and one of the crushing things is that so many people encouraged or allowed all of this.

Layla Amin and her family have watched things rapidly change around them. Muslims, much like the Jewish people in 1930s Germany, have begun to see their rights and freedoms stripped away one at a time. Layla just wants a normal life where she can be with her boyfriend without worrying about curfews and the unraveling of her world. Layla and her parents don’t see things the same way. They want to see the good in people. They still believe that they will be okay if they don’t make waves. They have hope and prayers, but Layla wants more than that to hold onto as more things are ripped away from them.

Samira Ahmed has crafted a story that is terrifying in its possibilities. Many of the issues in the book seem to have been lifted straight from our current newspapers. The story is all too realistic. It’s set just a bit in the future and it could certainly inspire some fear and heartache in readers. While there is hatred, bigotry, and violence against Muslims, there is also a lot of hope. Her parents are an excellent example of that and while the young people are frustrated by hope without action, they too have hope. One of the young people says that holding onto hope is hard work. This is quickly followed by a Rogue One quote, “Rebellions are built on hope.” There are people of all ages who step up at times, but the majority of the heavy lifting in this book is done by the young people. It’s a powerful testament to the strength and courage of young people. I loved that aspect of the story. Youth are often underestimated. Here the youth don’t wait for leaders, they become leaders.

By taking them to an internment camp, Layla feels that the government has taken her voice and choice. Through the book, Layla discovers that this may not be entirely correct. As she meets other frustrated people, she learns and grows and finds her own way of being in this restrictive place. She also discovers the power of unity and finds ways to be heard.

This is partially a story of survival. It offers a glimpse into what some people are willing to do to survive. What people are willing to give up to survive can be astounding and not always in good ways. Ahmed also shows us what some people are willing to do for others.

This book is a warning, a message of hope, and a call to action. The cap on the cover says Resist and so does the entire book.

  • It IS happening. In summer 2018 children of asylum seeking parents were taken from their parents and put into detention camps. Asylum seeking families are also held together in socalled "family detention prisons by ICE. Although these are predominanty Christian, religious hatred is rising. In October 11 worshippers were murdered at a synagogue. In France hate crimes against Jews happen almost daily. 51 worshippers were murdered in mid March 2019 at a mosque in New Zealand.
Although Muslims have not been interned, they face great prejudice. When the mosque shooting happened the President did the best he could never to mention that the victims were Muslims.
This book is not dystopian. Young people and adults need to read it and do what we can to erase bigotry from our hearts AND our government.
The way we are safe and free is by standing up for each other.

  • What a beautiful edition. I can’t wait to read this to my nephew who is learning Spanish. A new way to experience Harry Potter all over again )
  • I bought the Spanish version in order to help me learn the language. What a fun way to learn with a familiar story!

  • I gave this book as a gift to my Spanish-speaking friend who was learning how to read more fluently. I don't speak Spanish myself so I cannot reference how good or bad the translation is, but I love Harry Potter and she said she enjoyed the book very much.
  • I love Salamandra's Harry Potter translations and as always, love fast shipping!
  • I bought this for a redditgifts exchange; I liked the cover artwork but I can't say much else about the novel.
