When they prepare for medical school, few candidates take the time to acquire the caliber of recommendation letters they will need to distinguish themselves in a highly competitive applicant pool. This book, which was written by an Ivy League admissions expert, offers detailed advice to write (and get) persuasive letters that highlight the personal, academic and professional strengths the committee expects to see. It also includes 45 successful recommendation letters, including several that "explain" extenuating circumstances in a candidate's history (such as disappointing grades, a gap in employment, and low MCAT scores). At top medical schools, where the competition is fierce, the quality and depth of a candidate's reference letters can make the difference between acceptance and rejection. Whether you are an applicant who needs a persuasive letter of recommendation, or someone who has been asked to write one, this exceptional book is mandatory reading.

  • This book provides very specific, helpful recommendations for how to write outstanding and accurate letters of recommendation for medical school admissions. I have been writing these letters for years, and have been told that they have made a positive difference, but after reading this book I can see that they could have been far more effective. The author suggests ways of documenting that emphasize the student's strengths, as well as strategies for dealing with any problems that the student had had during college or before. She describes ways in which areas of difficulty can be a strength if the student has handled these well, and encourages writers to include these in the letters. Throughout, there is an emphasis on the importance of honest documentation and maintenance of integrity in all letters. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who writes letters for undergraduates who are seeking admission to medical school.

Te invito a leerlo y a compartirlo!
NO VA A VOLVER A SER IGUAL QUE ANTES, reaccionemos.

Recomendado. Ahora me espera wl siguiente libro...

The Number How the Drive for Quarterly Earnings Corrupted Wall Street and Corporate America Alex Berenson Mark Cuban 9780812966251 Books Reviews

  • In 'The Number', reporter and author Alex Berenson delves into the inner workings of Wall Street and all of your favorite multi-national conglomerate corporations to explore how a single number (perhaps "figure" is more accurate) is the only thing that matters in determining whether a company's stock soars or tumbles. This was released a decade ago but holds up nicely and remains relevant as things don't seem to have changed on "the Street" all that much. This is a fascinating book with great writing and a coherent thread that is easy to follow.
  • I wrote this review in late 2007 for a class

Greed. Unparalleled greed. One might assume from the title of his book that Alex Berenson wrote a mathematical treatise. He did not. The Number is a study of how independent, rational investors can and do throw their experience to the wind in a desperate money-grab, couched in business suits and financial statements, but unremoved from a freewheeling gold rush. Berenson writes in a comfortable, easy style refined through editorial experience as an author for [...], a Wall Street financial publication, but he is not measured or sanguine here. In this book, published shortly after the implosive demise of Enron, WorldCom, and hundreds of smaller companies that would not survive the market bust of 2000, Berenson's prose has the cynical, bitter flavor of a man who just cannot believe how far the mighty have fallen.

The Number has eleven chapters and crescendos to a peak with a recounting of the end of the bull market of the 1990s. The first four chapters cover the history of the stock market; the crash of 1929, the evolution of investment theory, the rock-and-hard-place alignment of accountants, and the creation of the Securities and Exchange Commission. In part two, Berenson explores 1987's Black Monday, and the conception of a new metric of company performance earnings per share, the number that entitles this book and that would lead indirectly to financial meltdown in 2000. Short sellers, those that bet that a stock will fall based on flaws in public filings, make an appearance in the later chapters. It's charitable that Berenson gives them the limelight here, because they would be ignored completely from 1995 to 2000. The Number pauses in chapter ten for a breath of air as Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve, ponders how to respond to the failure of the enormous hedge fund Long Term Capital in 1998. The markets were overvalued, but had yet to reach the unrestrained delirium that would envelop them a year later. Should he lower the short-term lending rates to promote investing, or let the market find its own way? Greenspan chose the former, a move that Berenson likens to pouring vodka in the communal punchbowl. The rest of the chapter is a whirlwind, a eulogy to the insane.

And then he comes to the aftermath, a survey of the damage wrought. Berenson talks of Enron, Sarbanes-Oxley, and the slow struggle for reform in the SEC. The last chapter is downcast. There is no catharsis. In 2003 at the time of writing, the Bush administration was already trying to reverse the regulations called for by the public just a year prior. The market had rallied as investors turned their attention to the looming specter of the Iraq War. Now in 2007, just five years after two of the largest bankruptcies in corporate history, after accounting fraud on a scale so enormous that it boggles the imagination, the Dow hovers at 13,500, a gain of twenty percent over the peak in April 2000. What have we learned? Apparently, nothing at all. As Berenson concludes, "The buyers remain as blissfully unaware as ever."

Berenson's thesis is that investors rely to excess on earnings per share figures. Companies should operate with an eye toward the future, but having stock prices and corporate options tied to quarterly earnings provides a tremendous incentive to cook the books. This seems so obvious in hindsight that Berenson has no trouble deftly illustrating his case. He draws from his own experience with [...], public records of other papers, interviews with prominent members of the financial community, and a vast working knowledge of the history of Wall Street. And he is right, of course, but solutions are slow in coming. The last few pages implore the reader to be skeptical, to keep the market in context; in short, to keep one's head in an atmosphere that smells overwhelmingly of dollar stock. That's all Berenson can offer. The book makes a strong case that the SEC should have more funding and that accountants should be held to higher standards, but he explicitly rejects discarding earnings per share. We need the number, Berenson says. We just don't need so much of it.

When he isn't lamenting the obsession with quarterly earnings, Berenson gives a withering indictment of the would-be fiduciaries of the financial community and their contribution to the bull market of the 1990s. The accountants lost their independence and with it their dignity, bedding the corporate executives that provided their fees. The SEC, perennially underfunded and led by men unwilling or unable to stand against the combined interests of their wards, was less a shotgun behind a door than a slingshot with a fractured band. Stock options corrupted company leadership and led to an incestuous relationship with analysts, with financial fraud as the inevitable result. With a market predicated on lies, a collapse was inevitable. Of the investors themselves, Berenson's tone is moderate. He does not chastise, but their behavior seems to baffle him at times. Why, when they discovered that America Online had lied about their profits, did investors continue to drive up AOL stock?

A seminal book on trading theory is A Random Walk Down Wall Street, by Princeton economist Burt Mikhael. He proposes that stock prices vary at random in the short term, and that investors would do best to put their money in index funds because it isn't possible to consistently beat the market average. A Random Walk and The Number both explore the efficient market hypothesis, wherein the prices of stocks are assumed to reflect all available information. A market that follows the stronger forms of EMH is difficult or impossible to beat, because historical information, private information, and analysis are reflected instantly in share prices.

There is an unstated presumption underlying EMH of a rational entity, of investing decisions that have a logical framework when viewed through the impartial lens of hindsight. After reading The Number, I concluded that the market is efficient in the way that EMH supposes. New, public information does impact share prices immediately. The problem is that it does not do so rationally. The investors, as a group, do not act rationally. Group psychology disproportionately magnifies the market response to small changes, like a trailer swinging behind a truck. Why did the market crumble in 2000? Berenson suggests, "As in 1929, no single profit report or piece of economic data caused the sell-off; investors simply decided en masse they could no longer justify owning stocks that traded at two hundred or three hundred or five hundred times earnings, or had no earnings at all and no prospect of making any." That's his entire explanation. After five years of euphoria on a heroin high, the market became suddenly sane. That Berenson does not explore this psychology is perhaps the only unsatisfying facet of The Number.

If there's a lesson here, it's that greed is the universal language, and people never, ever, change. There is nothing more galvanizing to the will of an investor than the notion that his neighbor is making money and he is not. This book is a case study of the disastrous consequences of unrestrained capitalism. In such an environment, only the firm hand of the Federal Reserve and the threat of the SEC can hold the corporate machine in line, and prevent investors from losing their confidence, their shirts, and their minds.
  • I bought this after reading Mark Cuban espousing it on his blog. I thought, given the subject matter, that it would be quite a dry book but Alex Berenson does an excellent job of making this an incredibly easy read while touching on a number of complex issues re the US stock market, accounting industry, SEC, etc.

Alex gives a great overview of corporate governance in the US, the evolution of the SEC, AICPA and FSAB, their marginalization at the behest of the US govt, and the role of all these parties in the run up to the Enron/Tyco/Worldcom fraud cases.

As a Brit now living in the US, The Number brought to light a series of issues and scandals that I was previously unaware of, and am still somewhat shocked by. The ineffectiveness of the bodies created to monitor and set accounting standards is quite staggering, as are the blatant conflicts of interest when the big accounting firms moved aggressively into management and technology consulting.

The most damning part of the book is the conclusion Alex reaches; that there is no champion within the world of US corporate governance, or indeed within the government itself, who is looking out for the individual consumer/investor. A sad state of affairs.

    Good read, well worth buying.

Total read time approximately 7-8 hours.
  • The Number is an excellent history of the stock market and what drove it up to about 2007. I recommend this book to any investor. It gives keen insights into what makes the market move. Those insights are as true today as when it was written. But, the writing style is a bit weak, almost high schoolish. This isn't because the writer is targeting a less intelligent reader / investor, but because he cannot write well. I think this is because of the writer's background as a magazine article writer rather than a book writer. Again, though, this is a must read for any investor.
  • This is a the story of wall street. There's no trading strategies or anything like that, but it's pretty good. I read it cover to cover
  • good
  • This book was a required as part of one of my masters degree courses, but I ordered it a few weeks before class started to get the book read. It was a very worhtwhile read that depicted on a historical basis the formation of makets and the efficiency (or lack there of). I thought I understood stock before I read this book and overall market performance. I am happy to report that I have a much better understanding and would highly recommend this book. Good read.
  • I read this book for my graduate business financial accounting class but I would read it all over again just for fun. It's extremely informative on the stock market. I learned so much after reading it. I would recommend to anyone interested in stocks.

"First, let me say that I have been shooting for a long time. Retired military and civilian competitive rifle shooter. But don't get me wrong, I am not saying that I know a better way. Because I don't...!! What I AM saying is that Linda Miller and Keith Cunningham got it right.

I have just recently started shooting tactical precision. It is a new discipline for me and I realized that I needed some help ... especially with wind. I started researching and through a lot of reading and a lot of luck I found this book. Actually, I started with internet searches and found several articles and books that referenced this book. Because it appeared to be universally accepted, I decided to purchase it ... along with some others. I am sure happy that I did.!! This book is very well done. It is complete... at least as complete as is possible to be with a subject like WIND.! I have read most of the reviews on this book and will only say this..... No, this book is not about shooting "across the course". No, this book is not about "service rifle". No, this book is not about .22 rimfire. No, this book is not about air rifle at short distances. This book is about WIND... And the techniques that can be used to alleviate some of the mental strain or anguish associated with WIND when you are shooting a rifle in WIND. All of these techniques are useful for all shooters in all disciplines. After all, wind is wind. It affects projectiles as they move toward their intended target, and to a lesser degree (maybe..?) it also affects the shooter because of the action of the wind against the shooter's body. Now, granted, the material is presented (mostly..generally..??) from the stance of a "high-power" shooter at various distances. A lot of the anecdotal information is from "Palma" and "Bisley" style shooting where the authors have participated (as might be reasonably expected..). But the truth is .... all of this information can be useful, can be made to conform to your discipline with a little thought and extrapolation.

I found the information to be comprehensive and very well thought through and presented. When speaking of wind flags, it is not so much about "use wind flags", but more about "HOW to use wind flags". And, WHY using two flags in two very distinct positions is so important. Not just any two flags, but two VERY SPECIFIC wind flags. When speaking of wind direction, it is not only about "wind value", but also about why a "fishtailing" wind that only varies twenty or thirty degrees can throw you WAY off your target. Normally twenty or thirty degrees of change will only cause a slight sight change (depending on wind strength..). But in two very distinct conditions that same fishtailing wind can wreak havoc.!! Linda Miller and Keith Cunningham know this..... And they impart that knowledge to the reader.

This book is filled with such pearls of wisdom. It is complete with charts and explanations and solutions. Each chapter is documented with End Notes that give the reader additional references to material within that chapter. I have now read through this book twice, and will undoubtedly read it again. It is that good.

I will recommend this book as the best treatment on this particular subject that I have been able to locate. It is a bit technical in spots, but the science behind the material requires it to be that way. If you want a good, precise background on WIND, this is one of the best books available. OTOH, if you don't like to read or you want someone to just tell you what to do, then this book may not be for you. It will require you to read and understand. But really, that's all... The information is there. It is up to you what you do with it....."

It covers how to get wind speed and direction from flags, mirage, and natural phenomenon. If your not a consistent shooter, you'll never know if the wind caused your bullet to move or if you did.

I don't understand the negative reviews for this book, whatever you shoot, if you want to be accurate you have to read the wind. Fact, can't argue with that. This book tells you how to read the wind. It does not give ballistics data for hundreds of different rounds or tell you what to do with your rim fire. That is not the purpose of the book, the purpose of the book is to instruct you in how to determine wind speed and direction which it does extremely well. There are all kinds of free ballistics programs out there for your specific round.

This book also outlines various strategies for dealing with wind in competition. I am not a competition shooter, but I still found the information interesting.

The reviewer who said this book is worthless must have something against the authors or Canadians in general. The methods used in this book are also the same methods used in numerous magazine articles and sniper manuals that I have read, from the Army's to the Marines to various civilian books. This book simply puts everything together in a more comprehensive and easier to understand fashion.

In my opinion this is the best book for learning to read wind speed and direction.
    • As a local competitive shooter some former Olympians and reading Boyer's book taught me about using 22LR in the wind. Having competed in 30 MPH (yes, 30 MPH) winds with 22LR at 100 yards it was demonstrated by the wind I'd better do some more learning. This book consolidated much of what I'd been taught, learned through practice, and taught me some new ways to look at wind such as using mirage. There is a little redundancy in the book, such as mentioning the bullet slows continually after leaving the muzzle, that in my opinion could have been avoided however there is an argument, which the authors may have had, for reinforcing concepts the three or four or five times this is done.
    • The Wind Book for Rifle Shooters is an excellent resource. As far as I know this is the only book of its type. It's very well written in a way that's easy to understand for such a complex subject. The charts and graphs are extremely helpful. It's a bit on the short side at about 125 pages but still packed with knowledge. The information contained within this book are not just opinions but tried and true facts. Much of the same information in this text is taught in various sniper training courses that I have attended. This book can make life much simpler for snipers or long distance competition shooters. The wind can be your worst enemy if you don't understand its effect on a bullet in travel. You need this book.
    • The less positive reviews for this book complain that it is for beginners. I found it more comprehensive than that. Not only are the authors champions, but they also quote and excerpt works from many other champion shooters. Their "Words of Wisdom" chapter alone has comprehensive tips from 18 champions and hall of fame shooters Before reading this book, I went from shooting 0.94 MOA ATC at 200 yards in a consistent breeze to 0.47 MOA ACT at 300 yards in a fishtailing wind.
    • Great book! Never realized how much the wind can effect the bullet coming out of the barrel. Been trying to read all I can on long range shooting and I can't think there would be any other books as informative as this one. Any serious distance shooter should own this book! It

Building on the success of the 2007 original, Dekker revises, enhances and expands his view of just culture for this second edition, additionally tackling the key issue of how justice is created inside organizations. The goal remains the same to create an environment where learning and accountability are fairly and constructively balanced. The First Edition of Sidney Dekker’s Just Culture brought accident accountability and criminalization to a broader audience. It made people question, perhaps for the first time, the nature of personal culpability when organizational accidents occur. Having raised this awareness the author then discovered that while many organizations saw the fairness and value of creating a just culture they really struggled when it came to developing it What should they do? How should they and their managers respond to incidents, errors, failures that happen on their watch? In this Second Edition, Dekker expands his view of just culture, additionally tackling the key issue of how justice is created inside organizations. The new book is structured quite differently. Chapter One asks, ’what is the right thing to do?’ - the basic moral question underpinning the issue. Ensuing chapters demonstrate how determining the ’right thing’ really depends on one’s viewpoint, and that there is not one ’true story’ but several. This naturally leads into the key issue of how justice is established inside organizations and the practical efforts needed to sustain it. The following chapters place just culture and criminalization in a societal context. Finally, the author reflects upon why we tend to blame individual people for systemic failures when in fact we bear collective responsibility. The changes to the text allow the author to explain the core elements of a just culture which he delineated so successfully in the First Edition and to explain how his original ideas have evolved. Dekker also introduces new material on ethics and on caring

    • This book beautifully lays out the decisions, dilemmas, and unintended consequences of either creating environments in which we can learn from accidents and near misses, or creating environments in which behaviors are hidden from fear of litigation, criminalization, or other punishments for "bad behavior." A must read for anyone trying to cultivate a safety culture in a high-stakes, high-complexity world!
    • Bought this book because this is the book Captain Sullenberger lost when he landed in the Hudson. Some of it is a bit over my dominant right-brain understanding, but I am learning a lot about safety and about accountability.
    • Sidney Dekker, PhD and Boeing 737 Captain has a great way of describing a different approach to dealing with human error that is very proactive, positive, and constructive. It leaves the error maker with improvements to make rather than punishment to bear, and it is one of the smartest ways to approach corrective action when errors are made.
    • I was stunned by this book. It changed my views on accidents and critical incidents completely. This book is a "must read" for anyone who manages an incident reporting system. .
    • A very well written and comprehensive on what is certainly to be the culture of the future in healthcare. Excellent read!
    • An easy to read book that will test your preconceptions of what is meant by 'just'. While I wasn't convinced by the chapter on ethics (omitted Virtues which seem to more closely fit with the notion of Just), and his solutions appear recursive, the book contains more that enough to make it a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf.
    • A must for every healthcare worker
    • It would be a great society. Using this wonderful book to talk about reform and transparency in healthcare.

The Bridges of Madison County Robert James Waller 8601410553425 Books Reviews

    • ....I don't remember when. I saw this show based solely on what I read about the score, something about picking up the gauntlet thrown down by Rogers & Hammerstein to write songs, real songs, not leitmotif. I wasn't disappointed.

I guess everyone has his/her criteria for what makes a great Broadway show (i.e., new shows, not revivals). For me, it's about hearing melodies I haven't heard a million times before. It's also about hearing songs that indelibly capture character in a single moment. This show did exactly that for me. I know this review is supposed to address the recording alone, but as the show is still running (and probably struggling for an audience while Aladdin will be SRO for the next dozen years) I can't help throwing kudos for the spare, deeply creative staging. I know that "beautiful" is the most overused adjective in the vernacular, but The Bridges of Madison County truly is that. The songs are simply lush, and every singer, especially O'Hara and Pasquale, render them with palpable passion. The show haunted me for days, and I can't wait to have the OBC recording on CD to treasure forever along with my other favorite shows of all time.

As to the reviewer a few notches below who gave this a poor review, I'm certainly not "hating" him (or her), nor do I consider myself an expert on this composer's oeuvre, but I clearly see great worth in this musical score. My recommendation to others is see the show, buy the music, decide for yourself.
    • I have been going to Broadway Musicals all my life and I have so many favorites - for so many different reasons. "The Bridges of Madison County" just moved to the top of my list. I wasn't expecting to be so moved when I first saw it during previews - But when I went back again this weekend, I was prepared. The music by Jason Robert Brown is absolutely gorgeous and at times even breath taking. I have seen the show twice and plan to go back again. The director found a team of collaborators including an amazing cast who understood and loved the material and translated it into a night of theatre that is now a part of me. The entire musical, on every level including the set, the staging, sound, lightening, every single element came together perfectly. Someone once asked me what I loved so much about theatre and I struggled to find the words to answer. I still struggle with finding the right words but the answer can be found in this beautiful musical. Paul Boynton
    • I have seen the movie Bridges of Madison county, but to read the book and the actual details I was in awe. When I got my book I look to see how many page is it was. The total pages is 171 pages, before that evening was over I had read half the book. I could not put it down. I have a few more pages to go but I was so excited that I skip to the end to see about the guy named Nighthawk who was the musician that knew Robert Kincaid, testimony. I am so glad that he told about Robert and Francesca. I'm happy that her children decided to put this into a book and it was made into a movie.

I remember in 1995 I went to see "The Bridges of Madison County with a companion of mine. And like Robert Kincaid could not forget Francesca neither could I forget the guy that I went to see the bridges over Madison county with. I love the movie and I love the book,!
    • 5 stars I have loved musicals since first taken at a ridiculously young age to the original production of King and I, and have a huge collection of CDs. I miss the musicals that are not afraid of big, character-driven emotional expression. This is it. Soaring melodies and extraordinary lyrics whose subtlety becomes clearer on every re-hearing -- and for a while I could not stop listening to it. Now the melodies are in in my head and come back to me at unexpected moments. I saw the show once in Williamstown with a different lead (who was also wonderful) when Kelli O'Hara was having her baby and then again early in its run on Broadway. I loved it and everyone I recommended it to loved it. They were often surprised by their reactions -- like me they thought the book and/or movie cheesy and sentimental tear-jerkers or soap operas (though effective ones). But I realized that many big operas are also tear-jerking soap operas at heart - La Boheme, La Traviata, and so on. It is the music that makes the cheesy emotions soar and become human and significant. I have to go back to South Pacific to think of a show where the music is as big and beautiful as the score here. So sad it could not find an audience and reprehensible that it was not even nominated for a best musical Tony and especially that Stephen Pasquale was not nominated as best actor in a musical. His gorgeous big voice and sexy stage presence are extraordinary. (In the song where he sings Come with me! my wife whispered to me "'I'd go with him in a second!") Buy it and love it. I hope when it tours it goes to a place I can get to. I would love to see it again

Guy Mannering French Edition Walter Scott 9781272226251 Books Reviews

    • Guy Mannering is the second of the Waverly novels by Scotland's greatest novelist Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). The novel was first published in 1815 cementing quondom poet Scott's best selling fame with the general public.
The novel begins on a dark and stormy night in southwest Scotland during the reign of George III. England and Scotland were united as Great Britain in 1707; one of Scott's motivation for penning the Waverly novels was to introduce English readers to their new fellow citizens north of the border.
Guy Mannering is a young Englishman who finds shelter from the storm at the estate of the Laird of Ellangowan. Mannering enjoys astronomy and astrology. He predicts to Mr. Bertram, owner of Ellangowan, that he will have a son who will face momentous events during his fifth, tenth and twenty-first year of life. That night is born Harry Bertram. A few years later Harry is stolen at the age of five by smugglers aided and abetted by the evil lawyer the odious Glisson.
Sixteen years pass. Mrs Betram has died and her husband the weak laird also sinks into the grave insolvent. The lawyer Glissin obtains the estate. Nothing has been heard of little Harry who had been abducted on the same night his protector on a mountain ride Mr. Frank Kennedy, a government revenue agent, was murdered. Harry Bertram (under the pseudonymn of Mr, Brown) returns to Scotland. He had been raised in Holland and became a British soldier in India serving under Colonel Guy Mannering. Mannering and Henry have quarreled. Henry is in love with Julia Mannering the high spirited daughter of the Colonel. While on his way back home to Ellengowan, Henry meets Mr. Dandie Dinmont a colorful farmer who is being beaten by thugs on a dark road. Henry befriends him spending a week at Charliehope the home of Dinmont. Dinmont raises terriers and a breed is named for him. Harry is captured by smugglers but is rescued by the sybil witch Meg Merrilies who stand over six feet tall
Meanwhile, Colonel Mannering has taken into his care Lucy Betram and Harry's eccentric clergical tutor named
Dominie Sampson. Lucy is in love with Charles Hazelwood a wealthy lawyer whose family does not want him to marry someone of a lower financial strata of society.
Harry shoot Hazelwood in an accident. He is imprisoned but eventually, through the help of his friends, is realeased. Mr. Pleynell, a lawyer, proves to the court that Harry is not an imposter but the real Harry Betram of Ellangowan. He weds Julia and inherits the estate. His sister Lucy becomes the bride of Hazelwood. The evil Glissin and the smugglers who stole Harry away end in grisly deaths.
Guy Mannering is more interesting that Waverly. Scott's dense Scottish dialect will slow you down but there is an excellent glossary of Scottish terms and historical footnotes to make the novel easier to digest for 21st century readers. Scott is an acquired taste but is important as the father of the historical romance in fiction. He induced men, not just women, to become devoted novel readers. His colorful characters influenced writers such as Dickens and he was admired by Jane Austen. I enjoyed this book and you will too!
    • I was trying to research my grandfather on line; his name was Guy Mannering *******. Well, about 3,000 people with the name of Guy Mannering popped up in my search. That got me questioning who Guy Mannering was. He must have been pretty impressive for so many people in the late 1800's to name their sons after. That's when I discovered this book and Sir Walter Scott.
It is a great read although you will have to get used to the Scottish dialect that some of the characters use.
The lead character is great, overcomes a lot and never loses his dignity. It has a lot of twists and turns in the plot so it is not as predictable as one might think.
      Sir Scott's works never disappoint!
    • As a child I struggled with Ivanhoe (though my English teacher's advice to skip the first 30 pages certainly did help). As an adult, I enjoyed Waverly but still found it rather hard going. With this background I approached Guy Mannering with some trepidation but ended up enjoying the book thoroughly. This edition is excellent and the notes and glossary are very helpful. The story moves fairly slowly compared with modern novels but the richness of detail, the topographic descriptions and especially the humor make it memorable. Read it when you have time to enjoy it and don't be put off by the rather archaic Scottish dialect (I was brought up close to the Scottish border but many words and phrases were completely unknown to me)
    • Story is excellent. However, this edition appears that it was never edited. It has multiple typos all throughout the book. For example, "the huts poor and mean, and at a great distance front each o,. her"(page 176). I recommend the story, but would recommend purchasing a different edition.
    • A very nice read.
    • This book is carefully corrected and printed to the author's original writings. It is a pleasure to obtain this authenticated copy.

48 Hours A Novel William R Forstchen Books Reviews

    • I’ve read all of William Fortschen’s books. They’re among the best of apocalypse fiction, a genre dominated by potboilers, so naturally, I preordered this book. My big question was if the author could write something new, especially since at first glance it appears the apocalypse in "48 Hours" is very similar to the EMP found in Fortschen’s most famous book, "One Second After." Without giving the story away, I can tell you this book is quite original. And to me, the most interesting matter that Fortschen covers, indeed the plot driver of the entire book, relates to a long-running apocalypse concern of mine. Namely, that the government, at any level, is not our friend, and would be our enemy in any real crisis where someone has to lose.

It’s entirely obvious, upon a moment’s reflection, that in any crisis today, whether a pandemic that requires medicine, a nuclear attack that requires shelter, a famine that requires food, or an alien attack where the aliens demand human flesh to eat, that our rulers would save themselves and their cronies first, along with, to the extent possible, their own property, and certainly, as much as possible, their own power. I think this is mostly a new thing, the result of the rot of our ruling classes, including the disappearance of duty, virtue, and noblesse oblige George Washington wouldn’t save himself first, but I am certain that both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton would (the latter more certainly than the former). Oh, sure, they’d make noises about how important it was that there be “continuity of government,” and that it was all for the future greater good, but the reality is that they’d make sure they got theirs, and so would their friends.

And it’s not just the President. For no reason I can comprehend, other than naked self-interest, Congress strongly believes that saving Congress is regarded as important, so they, their families, their staffers, and their hangers-on would get to the front of the line. Bureaucrats of all stripes, the poisonous fruit of the grasping administrative state, would also get served first. After all, how could we live without a fully staffed EEOC? And it’s not just the federal government; as Fortschen paints a vivid picture, it would be state governments as well. Not to mention that local governments would also get in on the act. Municipal governments mostly wouldn’t have bunkers or stockpiled food (although I bet New York and Chicago do, hidden and reserved for Bill de Blasio and Rahm Emanuel, along with their toadies). But I’m pretty certain, for example, that if the food ran out, in most municipalities the city government, allied with the police, would use the military equipment that the federal government has stupidly handed out, to go around collecting food and medicine “for equitable distribution.” Which is one reason I occasionally run the thought experiment of how to deal with the armored personnel carrier my local police department operates. Did you know that modern APC’s can be easily pierced by standard .50 caliber rounds? I didn’t.

It’s unfortunate that today government is not to be trusted. Perhaps it never could have been trusted, but the difference today is that the government has enormously more power. Power to know what’s coming, power to build to protect the people who control it, power to defend what it builds. But that’s where we are, and at least the view of government as the enemy in a zero-sum crisis is something that people all across the political spectrum can get behind, although conservatives and libertarians are probably more inclined to this realization. That is, it might take liberals more time to realize that when government workers and their families go to the front of the line, that there won’t be a back of the line, whatever promises are being made. And those promises would be made—and perhaps even believed, because history shows that average people will swallow almost any story if accepting it makes them able to put off the choice to fight. A strange inertia seems to overcome most people. Rather than shooting their way to the front of the line when the fat EPA clerk waddles, along with his family and cousins, back into the “Government Workers Only” food line for seconds, then thirds, they’ll more likely wait for the promised crumbs to be dribbled to them through the barbed-wire-topped fence. That’s stupid. Shoot first.

I suppose you can’t really blame government workers for putting themselves at the front. It’s a natural human response, after all. Self-sacrifice to benefit others is largely, or exclusively, a Western concept derived from Christianity, and an aspirational one at that. For example, during famines in China, including those caused by Mao, it was common for parents to kill and eat their children (although often by swapping their children with others’, so they didn’t have to do it themselves), something essentially inconceivable in the West, though perhaps not any longer in these post-Christian days. The same thing happens in North Korea today, and I suspect would be true of any culture that is not Christian (or Jewish or Muslim, who have a similar self-sacrificing ethos, though without the applicable-to-everyone demand of the Golden Rule). Why is it inconceivable to us, though, given that sacrificing others makes utilitarian sense? It’s because of our superior culture, where parents would rather die that contemplate such an action, and everyone knows his duty is to take one for the team. But I don’t think this principle extends, at least today, to limit governmental self-dealing in a crisis where someone has to lose—and that’s what this book illustrates with dramatic impact.

I don’t think that this is necessarily an argument for a minimalist state. True, certainly, the state we have now is terrible, and a minimalist state would solve the problem of self-dealing by our ruling class in a crisis. But I am not a libertarian; the governmental structure I would prefer is not one that necessarily maximizes personal liberty, certainly not in the way of modern “liberal democracy,” but a strong state based on principles of practicality and virtue—strong, that is, in those few areas that matter, and either non-existent in most areas of life, or based around rigorous principles of subsidiarity in any matters not essential to the central government. Albert Jay Nock would hate my vision of government, but he would entirely agree with my point about modern governmental self-protection in crises.

Still, even my Augustan-type state would be susceptible to this problem, of the human beings who make up government acting purely in their own self-interest. Our governmental heroes, or those who used to be our governmental heroes, like George Washington, were exceptional men. In more recent times, I suppose, there are examples of leaders in government who refused to exempt themselves from risks faced by the common people, such as Churchill and King George VI staying in London during the Blitz, or even Stalin refusing to leave Moscow in 1941 (though he kept his fast train ready). But you can’t get exceptional men, reliably at least, without a virtuous society to generate them, and so getting that society is the key to solving the problem. I can’t think of any self-sacrificing or risk taking by any member of a Western government in many decades, but I can remember the entire United States government scurrying like rats to protect themselves on 9/11, and then turning Washington, and every federal building in the universe, into a fortress, at the cost of hundreds of billions, while grabbing massive amounts of fresh power for themselves. Maybe I’d be surprised by how our government reacted in a crisis. But I doubt it.

You won’t feel good when you’ve finished this book. But you’ll have learned something that may be very useful to you someday, that those who should protect us will do nothing of the sort, so it’s probably worth doing.
    • I love this genre. When I read the book summary I literally thought, "Game on!" and bought it immediately. I loved the One Second After series so I knew I liked the author so it was a no brainer. I bought it for my so I don't know what page I'm on officially, but I am around 47% of the way through the book and just... stopped reading.

I was immediately disappointed because the book opens after the first CME hits, so I felt misled considering the summary I read In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the Sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off.

To me the summary made it sound like we would get to see the very beginning of shutting things down, but no. Things have been down for weeks when the story opens and it's another CME that's coming to cause more damage. Okay, no biggie I'll keep going it still sounds cool.

I hated the use of all things military in this book (so far). It just seems shoved down our throats like "look at all these military things we know" especially calling Afghanistan "the 'Stan". It was just awkwardly inserted. Also apparently three tours there make you an expert in everything military and makes you excellent in everything even though it doesn't seem he gets any specialized training. Then his wife, whose father owned a specialty gun shop (I think it's said they did additions and personalization to guns) that she inherited, is some kind of ninja who routinely gets called away on secret missions for weeks at a time with top secret clearances and sat phones. So apparently gun shop owners can be commandos just because they own a gun shop? I can buy she's a crack shot, but everything else just seems crazy. At least give us some back story as to how she got into that and have it make some sense.

I was so excited about this book because in addition to loving apocalypse stories I love all things astronomy. I was so excited to get quite a bit of science in this book when they were explaining the solar events. But then they just kept explaining the events... and explaining... and explaining. One of the scientists sits in with the president a few times doing most of the explaining and re-explaining. Then after discussing how all of this radiation was likely to kill everyone and everything the president was suddenly shocked when the scientist mentioned the fall out after the event is over and how it can continue to kill people, animals, etc and keep them from easily coming back. I mean, hello! Radiation? Of course it has long term affects on life in the area. Isn't this after the A-bombs have been dropped? Don't we know that things are really bad even after the initial blast? How is the damn president (who has been dealing with this for at least a month now) shocked by this? Then, of course, we get even more explanations.

The part that did me in, though, is how Darren and Darla (the main characters) are now taking over Darren's place of employment. He conveniently works at an underground cave that houses an enormous amount of food and other supplies which of course is being prepped for higher ranking officials and their families to come seek shelter. Darren and Darla disapprove (not that they're wrong about that) and decide to wrangle up Darren's former deputy (who they compared to Barney Fife with Barney winning the comparison mind you), the pastor at their church that was never mentioned before this, and a handful of church deacons.

So these people decide they are going to take the place over. They bring their handful of cars (I don't remember 3-6 vehicles) drive into the place and with a few guns pointed at the on site leader they take over the base. I just don't get it. Darren even has the audacity to get pissed at the leader when he says something impolite to his poor wife while she is going on her holier than thou tirade.

They are going to fill the cave with kids along with some teachers and medical staff, not the parents or anything. So these kids are going to come out knowing how to re-seed the area so they can grow food, right? Doubtful. I would bet the government would have people whose sole purpose is to make things inhabitable when this is over. I can understand wanting save all the kids, but damn at least give them the help they need to survive when they run out of food in the cave.

I'm hoping it gets better, but I'm not holding hope. I'll keep plodding along for now. Hopefully I'll update this soon with a completely changed mind.
    • I've enjoyed some of his other books, but this one is awful.

The book badly needs editing. It's extremely repetitive and even pedantic. The "pedantic" part is an unusual criticism from me, because personally, professionally, and in my casual reading adventures, I am an unapologetic science geek. It's nearly impossible to turn me off with technical details, but somehow this book manages it, because the descriptions and explanations drone on. and on. and on.

The main characters are cliches, and are not at all developed - there's a flatness and sameness to them, so it's impossible to engage with them or care what happens to them. He seems to use the characters to deliver lectures about his personal social and spiritual perspectives, and this comes across overall in a tedious and self-righteous manner. If that weren't enough, there are lengthy sections of the book, presented as 'asides' in italics, that he uses as a vehicle for even MORE awkward philosophizing and sermonizing. I'm sorry, but it's all just awful.

The story is based on a great idea which could have led to an absolute stunner of a novel. The implications are so profound that a well-crafted story would highlight them without any need to lecture the reader. The practical, moral, and spiritual challenges would be real and compelling, and readers don't need the author to pedantically moralize at them. A great story gently persuades the reader to consider difficult questions. This one just repeatedly hits you over the head with the authors' own biases - your own thoughts about issues raised by the story don't matter. I regret this purchase.

    • Recently my friend, photographer Paula Swift published a wonderful book about documenting the lives of families with children. Starting her career as a photojournalist she had just embarked on a new adventure of creating a catalog of memories for growing families. This is when our paths crossed. My son was six months old and I will never forget one of our sessions in our back yard with him in a vintage crate surrounded by beautiful New England foliage.
Now, 10 years later we still have photo sessions every year and I feel so blessed to have met Paula when I did. Our family story is told through her art. Many of these photographs are in her new book, which is a joy to thumb through as the warmth of it seeps in your soul.
I feel that this book is a must read for every young family.
    • This book is not only great for anyone wanting to learn professional tips - it's just a beautiful book to look through. Paula's style and unique approach is wonderful! Her photos not only capture emotion unlike any photographer I've ever seen/known; they bring out emotion as well. She's simply amazing and I hope there is second edition - a coffee table version would be fantastic!! Karen Duffy
    • I have always loved Paula's photography and have for over 9 years now. I never expected such an awesome photography book too! She has so much talent it's incredible. I absolutely love this book and reading about the meaning behind each picture. She truly cares about her clients. I am buying one for every person I love!
Congrats Paula!! You deserve this after all your hard work!
