"I absolutely loved this book!!!!! What an adventure to experience and so well written and descriptive that I felt as if I was on the journey too! The humour infused in the story was great and in places had me laughing so hard the tears ran down my face. My fave was the description about how we can react when faced with a large animal such as a bear. Play opossum? Not if you find out what that really means! Haha! You'll have to read the book to truly appreciate that description.
I highly recommend this book and I also had the privilege of meeting both Dick and Gaila. They are as entertaining in person as in their book. I look forward to reading about their next journey!!"

- His wife is a saint. Extreme selfishness of this hiker makes reading it an uncomfortable experience. She runs around, taking care of the family publishing business, and their daughter, while chasing him across the country and supplying him with food and hot RV showers. He's moderately grateful. He pushes himself to make it to a meeting point for his wife's birthday dinner-- seemingly because he wants the meal. After the hike, he tells her he will stop eating giant meals when he weighs more than she does. Nice. Like I said, the wife is a saint.
- I have just completed my second reading of Crossing the Divide and I have to share that I may have enjoyed it even more the second time. This book is for anyone who has done any hiking even on a minimal scale, anyone who has done long distance hiking, and for anyone who has just dreamed of hiking. The reader is immediately drawn into the dynamics of the five month long hike and how the authors insured that it would be a family adventure from the beginning. Dick and Gaila have a true gift in being able to not only so eloquently share the physical demands of Dick's hike of the Continental Divide from Mexico to Jasper, Alberta, Canada but also to convey the emotions that played heavily in their experience. I loved the fact that I felt like I was hiking along with Dick as he wrote about his experiences of covering twenty to thirty miles a day in all kinds of weather conditions and terrain. And each of his chapters was followed by Gaila's writings as she and their daughter Maggie shared the adventure from their perspectives of being the support team, following Dick in the family RV. I am convinced that no one could have more positive attitudes than this wonderful family as they encountered challenge after challenge along their 3800 miles. And every reader will be astounded at all the "trail magic" they experienced along the way. It left me believing that this great adventure was meant to happen! Anyone who has crossed the Continental Divide even in an automobile will appreciate the toll this "hike" had to take on Dick's body. But every reader will love Dick's sense of humor as he shares his stories along the trail. When I finished the book I wished I could thank the authors in person for sharing their experience in such a personal way. In short, this is the perfect story of an incredible family adventure.

I highly recommend this book and I also had the privilege of meeting both Dick and Gaila. They are as entertaining in person as in their book. I look forward to reading about their next journey!! - This is a totally delightful read for anyone who likes to hike and enjoys the challenges of hiking. I found I was looking forward to getting back to reading the book as I went through my day. Dick has a good sense of humor and many of the scariest situations he faced ended up the funniest to read. Gaila, Dick's wife, writes about her experiences as the leader of the support crew, which was made up of their daughter and other family members. Her voice added a pleasant dimension to the story. I highly recommend this book about Dick and Gaila's adventures.
- Loved, Loved Loved this family and their journey. I enjoyed his hiking journey but I also enjoyed her writing about her and her daughter's journey in the west and of supporting his hike. What an act of love and service.
Such a positive attitude on all parts even though this was very tough in every way. - Amazing adventure for this family of 3 as told by the husband and the wife. Since we are campers, we enjoyed reading about all the great places they visited and all the campgrounds they stayed in. It was enjoyable to lead the vicarious life of a through-hiker on the CD trail.
- Just getting started - I was looking for more of a "how-to" manual with more specifics about the route and the way to find places where we could camp out to provide some assistance, supplies and a home-cooked meal for people hiking the trail - a slight disappointment, but mostly due to my causal approach towards ordering.
- Arguably, endurance athletes and explorers are hedonists, and sort of "in it for themselves". Perhaps because I serendipitously met Richard and Gaila near the southern terminus some time after their big adventure, I found their story to be of united family love. I knew soon after I started the account of this team expedition I would hate the book, because I realized it would eventually come to a terminus of its own, and I didn't want that to happen. They brought me into their story and I felt a part of them and of the trek. Steve Scarano/Hamburger Helper PCT Trail Angel
